Ramblings

Hello to my flist. I know I haven't been around much, a lot on my mind.

Gotten hooked on The Sims 2.

Movies.

Atonement. A classic tear jerker and one hell of a good film.

Cloverfield. I'm not sure. It's a lame premise, the acting is, well, bad. But, still, it is somehow compelling.

I've been having some angst over my life at the moment. Retirement, especially an unplanned one like mine, is not all it's cracked up to be.

I've been having trouble writing. Maybe it's just as well, I don't think many people care for my stories. I have trouble eliciting responses of any sort. I think I've pissed off a couple of the Captains at the Quidditch Pitch defending my work. If I have, I apologize, but I never seem able to get a clear explanation as to what makes my work porn and someone else's erotica.

If anyone on my flist feels inclined to read any of my stuff on TQP or on my LJ or in some of the fests I've written for, I'd appreciate any suggestions, rude or otherwise, as to how I could improve.

I have one more fest on my list right now, but I haven't even started.

Maybe I'll post to Adult Fan Fiction more, there's no editorial process and perhaps my porn is more suited to it.

Yeah, I've been having a real whine here, but I needed it. I do thank any of you who have taken to trouble to comment on my work in the past.

Oh, and thank you to everyone who congratulated me on the granddaughter. She's home now, of course. If I can figure out how, I'll post a picture. I'm just not very good at that.

The photos come up fine and your granddaughter is beautiful.

It is frustrating when you can only get people 'pooh pooing' your work and not get any contructive feedback on where you can improve.

I, for one, enjoy your writing, which comes across as down to earth and realistic rather than the 'oh so perfect' sex everyone seems to write.

Personally, I'd say if you enjoy the writing process keep going!

I appreciate your comments, all of them. I imagine I'll keep writing but I'm in a dry period right now, not much in the way of ideas.

Porn vs. Erotica

...but I never seem able to get a clear explanation as to what makes my work porn and someone else's erotica.

I might have a thought on that. Now, I'm not thinking of any work of yours in particular when I say this. This is just a generalization, and might or might not be a useful suggestion for you. Take it with a grain of salt.

In general, I think the difference is how much the writer is getting into the characters' headspaces. We think of "porn" as a work that focuses solely on the physical aspects of the sex act, and "erotica" as something that focuses more on the mental/psychological/emotional ones. That doesn't necessarily imply romance; a lot of us find a good old-fashioned grudgefuck or a bit of dub-con hot, too. ;)

A good rule of thumb that I've seen is that you should write at least as much description of what's going on in your character's head and what he or she is experiencing as description of the physical actions taking place. If you're writing primarily the actions, your piece is going to sound like a letter to Penthouse at best, a laundry list at worst.

I'd suggest taking a loook at other writers' stuff that you enjoy, and considering why it is you enjoy it, and what about it makes it appealing to you. Then ask yourself if you're doing those things with your own writing. It may sound absurd, but I honestly cannot begin to tell you how much my own writing has been improved by the simple process of reading other people's writing and thinking about what did and didn't work for me. I'm not suggesting that you mimic anyone else's style, of course, but there are some fairly universal elements to "good" writing.

This is a very good assessment! I agree.

The impact of titillating words is gone pretty quickly when you read a lot of adult material, but getting into a character's head and heart and making us laugh, squirm, cry and hold our breath while the titillation is occurring, that's where you really connect with readers. I think even the really good grudgefuck and dub-con fics are good because they acknowledge the psychological impact on the characters.

Pettybureaucrat, I'm sorry I'm not familiar with your writing. I think your writing tends to be of pairings that aren't quite right for me, but I respect you for opening yourself up for the discussion.

And the baby is gorgeous!

Actually, I'd argue that romance and all the trimmings are absolutely not necessary in order for a piece to be considered "erotica." There are a number of people who enjoy erotic non-con (not generally my thing) where there's not a speck of romance to be found. Others really get into hatesex, sex motivated by spite or manipulation, or a good old-fashioned grudgefuck (definitely my thing) -- and again, there's no romance as far as the eye can see.

I'd even go so far as to argue that plot and build-up are not even required. But I think you're right in suggesting that characterization does make a significant difference. As I discussed above, with "erotica" the emphasis is on the mental/psychological experiences of the people involved more so than on the purely physical aspects of the sex act. So if you're aiming for "erotica" rather than "porn," then justification through characterization (not necessarily plot) is essential.

I appreciate the input you two have given me.

It's rather odd that the Harry/Katie piece is the one story I submitted to TQP that was accepted within a day and without a quibble. I've submitted stories that I thought were much better, more 'erotic' if you will, and they get dismissed with hardly a comment. I think that is what bothers me the most, comments like 'tone' and 'flow' which are simply too vague.

I very much enjoy writing Nargle fiction, I think Harry/Ginny/Luna are a much more interesting Trio than Harry/Ron/Hermione. I have nothing against Hermione, but I've never been much of a Ron fan.

OOC as a rejection reason really hacks me off, though. If you believe in being 'canon' then any sex between any characters, other than those already married, is OOC. And if you write 'fanon,' well, that's the whole point! They act as the author interprets their personality from the books.

I had a story rejected because Hermione was OOC for being 'too shy and retiring.' I think she's a great deal more OOC in a menage a trois with Ron and Harry.

I'll have to find some of those Kensington books.

I haven't seen much from Flaming Nargles recently. I guess the Epilogue bummed us Nargle writers out. CSI, I did enjoy your series of the Ministry forcing the three of them apart, though. Any more tales in the offing?

AGain, thank you both for your input.
