Wow, I'm posting again already

I had an opportunity yesterday to finally drink one of the beers my oldest daughter so thoughtfully gave me for Christmas. She's the one teaching English in French elementary schools in Metz.

I presume the official name of this beer is "L'Alsacienne" - the girl from Alsace. However, she tells me every one orders it by asking for a "Sans Coulotte" - without panties.

I wonder why?

The beer is actually very, very good. So, if you find yourself in Alsace-Lorraine anytime, you know what to ask for at the bar!

Saw "There Will Be Blood" last night. Easy to see why Daniel Day-Lewis took Best Actor. But, if you saw this movie, could you explain to me just what the hell was the point?

About There will be Blood:

I do not think of it so much in terms of one specific point.

For me it was all about the things it made me think about. It made me think about how this country was built. It made me think both about the physicality of that building -- what it means to start with nothing and literally build something -- and the ruthlessness and single-mindedness a lot of that building might have involved. It also made me think about truth and family and how these notions get constructed. The way we cling to what we imagine these things should be often missing some opportunities for other kinds of truth or other sorts of family.

Both Eli and Daniel cling to these narrow views of life. Different, but both narrow and based in power and fear. Both miss out on opportunities for love (not romantic love but Love) because of the narrow boxes they have put themselves into.

And of course there is the basic point What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Daniel has come from having nothing to having everything but he is still alone and sleeping on the floor.

Those are my few thoughts anyway. I really loved that first half-hour or so with no dialogue. I also really liked the soundtrack.
