WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!

Under the cut are my thoughts on Deathly Hallows. Naturally, there are spoilers.

What I liked.

The escapes, especially from Gringotts and Malfoy Manor.

Hermione beating on Ron when he comes back.

JKR’s wordplay, especially on Potterwatch. ‘River’ Jordan, ‘Romulus’ Remus.

Meeting Luna’s father, the wildly wacky Xenophilius! Stranglove Lovegood!

Luna’s painting of The Trio, Ginny and Neville as ‘Friends.’

Neville, my main man!

Molly defeating Bellatrix.

Kreacher’s ‘conversion,’ Dobby’s sacrifice, and, of course, Snape’s ‘redemption.’

Percy’s return. The fact that Fred welcomed him back only minutes before his own death is just heartrending.

Ravenclaw had a tiara! I wrote an unpublished fanfic years ago that said the Ravenclaw Horcrux was a tiara!

Now, what I didn’t like.

My biggest problem with DH was where was Ginny? After building her up as a fit companion for The Trio in the last two books, JKR basically sends her to a convent.

The concept of ‘The Trace’ as the way that the Ministry keeps track of underaged wizards makes it obvious now why Ginny couldn’t accompany Harry. However, there were several opportunities that he could have taken to see her or at least communicate with her and he never took them. He could have asked Remus or Bill to take a message to her at Muriel’s, for example.

Even in the final chapters, at Hogwarts, Ginny is forced into the background. Her parents insisting she stay in the RoR because she’s underaged and Ginny agreeing is just so unlike her! True, she ‘escaped’ when The Trio needed privacy but even they tried to make her come back! And she didn’t even have an individual duel recorded! Couldn’t JKR at least have let her take out a major Death Eater?

And if she ever finds out that Harry walked past her on the way to his ‘death’ and didn’t even stop to say goodbye...

I’m probably way too worked up over this, but it just seemed so unfair. As a rabid Harry/Ginny fan I feel, well, cheated that she truly had so little to do and so little impact on the story. True, Harry often thought of her and she was his ‘dying’ thought, but there were opportunities for her to do more that JKR didn’t take choose to explore. Why couldn’t she have been on ‘Potterwatch,’ for example?

And finally, although she and Harry have their ‘happily ever after,’ will she ever be more than just ‘Mrs. Harry Potter?’ Perhaps that’s all she wants, or ever wanted, but somehow I don’t think so. Hermione will NEVER be JUST ‘Mrs. Ronald Weasley’ in people’s minds, not after what she did. I thought Ginny would have the same ‘fame’ or ‘notoriety.’

I guess I should look upon DH as JKR’s version of ‘The Odyssey’ and Ginny is the faithful Penelope. OK, I can live with that.

Other issues.

Like many other reviewers, I am truly amazed that both Tonks and Lupin died. While they both had a true reason for wanting to be in the final battle, I would have thought that Tonks’ maternal instincts, and her mother’s pleas (of which there must have been many), would have kept her with her son. It really seems so pointless.

Luna and Dean. Luna and Dean? LUNA? And DEAN? Sorry, Jo, that ship won’t sail.

Not a single Slytherin stayed for the battle? Pansy Parkinson has THAT much influence? Just didn't ring true. Regulus deserted his Slytherin principles, all the Malfoys become very 'unSlytherin-ish' during DH. And that archtypical Slytherin, Severus Snape, was Dumbledore's man through and through. There should have been a couple.

All those peabrained idiots on TV and in the media that kept referring to Harry Potter as CHILDREN’S books! Harry Potter is many things but ‘children’s literature’ it ain’t. Any series of books that begins with a double murder and scenes of shocking child abuse does NOT qualify as ‘children’s’ literature in my view.

Anyway, enough sour grapes. The book is done and it was a very satisfying end to the saga. I suppose my future writing may not be totally DH-compliant. Well, that’s the great thing about fanfiction, isn’t it? It’s fiction! And so is Harry Potter.

I agree, there wasn't enough Ginny in the book.

I'm now waiting for some Fanfic to fill in the missing 19 years!

In the meantime I'm rereading the series from the start. I wonder if I'll pick up any of the clues she apparantly left us?

I think the fanfic has started already. I'm working on some, but post-DH and missing moments. I'm hard at work on a Harry/Ginny. I figured out a way they could be together long enough to 'do the deed!' I'm looking for beta(s).

I'm happy to 'brit pick' and pretty good with spellings, but not so good with grammer - it's far too long since I left school ha!

If you need me to help out let me know.

This post makes me realize something...

My disappointment wasnt as a shipper, it was as a Ginny fan. Harry's dying thought being of Ginny is all well and good, but I'd much rather she had a substantial shining moment as someone OTHER than the Love Interest. Hell, I'd even have taken *gasp* H/Hr as long as Ginny got a kickass moment like Neville...

Well, when I write MY version of the final battle, you can bet Ginny will be whupping someone's ass! I'm working on a missing moment. I figured out how Harry and Ginny could get together and, well, do the deed! Hope to have it up in a day or two. Thanks for the comment.
